Funding

Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia (FCT) is the Portuguese public agency that supports science, technology and innovation, in all scientific domains. FCT is the main supporter of the scientific community in Portugal and provider of PhD Scholarships. Portuguese and foreign nationals can apply for a PhD scholarship.

FCT accepts applications in all scientific areas. Given the interdisciplinary nature of the PhD in Population Sciences you can choose the one that better matches your work plan.

There are two types of PhD scholarships:

the more traditional one, with research work to be carried out in scientific and academic institutions.
a newly create one, with work plans to be carried out, entirely or partially, in a non-academic host institution.

Thanks to partnerships with Statistics Portugal, CoLABOR and Fundação Luso-Americana para o Desenvolvimento, you will have the possibility of developing your research in these institutions and apply for the second type of scholarships.

NEW! 'La Caixa' 2024 call for early-career researchers of any nationality and all scientific areas wishing to undertake a doctoral programme in any scientific field in Spain or Portugal (applications until 15 Feb 2024). Some requirements:

Applicants must not be enrolled in a doctoral programme before the start of the scholarship.
Applicants must have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in Spain/Portugal for more than 12 months over the 3 years.
